“Behind her eyes” by Sarah Pinborough // Book Review

This post is also available in: frFrançais

Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone.

When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar…who says the kiss was a terrible mistake but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise.

And then Louise bumps into Adele, who’s new to town and in need of a friend, but she also just happens to be married to David. David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife, but then why is David so controlling, and why is Adele so scared of him?

As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong, but Louise can’t guess how wrong―and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

“Everyone has secrets, Lou,” she says. “Everyone should be allowed their secrets. You can never know everything about a person. You’d go mad trying to.”

“It’s not that difficult, I want to say. People cheat all the time. The reasons are always selfish and base, it’s the excuses we make that are complicated.”

This review will be quite difficult to write since I was extremely disappointed …

Right now, I am in love of psychological thrillers, it is clearly my favorite genre … I was so excited to finally read this one since everybody seems to love it. I had already read a book by this author “Poison” that I did not like at all, but it was a different genre: a retelling of a fairy tale.

And at the end, what a disappointment!

If like me, you read realistic thriller, don’t read this book since here it is more like a supernatural thriller… The publisher sells this book mentioning: “this end, no one has seen it coming”, I just want to shout loudly: OF COURSE no one can think of an end like that knowing that everything is unbelievable and totally unrealistic .. If aliens had arrived it would not have been worse.

What about the style of the author, except that I still do not love it. I was bored, it was a pretty slow and repetitive story. The characters are all unfriendly and didn’t care if they’ll die at the end or not.

I liked the change of perspective, I’m still a pretty fan of this style of storytelling, it usually works well with me and makes me want to continue reading, even if I sincerely hesitated with this one!

But I finished this book, why? Just because everyone was talking about this crazy end … and in the end, I really lost my time …

This book may please you, I do not say the opposite, but as you see I am not one of the people who will recommend it.
